Glaucoma Filtration Surgery is an eye procedure designed to lower pressure inside the eye when glaucoma is not adequately controlled with medicines or other treatments. The surgery creates a new pathway that allows aqueous fluid to drain from the eye more effectively. Lowering eye pressure helps protect the optic nerve and reduce the risk of further vision loss.

Creating a Controlled Drainage Pathway for Intraocular Pressure Management

This procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia with appropriate eye anesthesia and patient monitoring. The eye and surrounding area are prepared with antiseptic solutions and covered using sterile Nivda Ophthalmic Drapes to establish a clean operative field. The surgeon creates a carefully controlled opening in the sclera and accesses the anterior chamber to establish an alternative pathway for aqueous humor drainage. A partial-thickness scleral flap is fashioned, and in some techniques an antimetabolite such as mitomycin C is applied to reduce excessive scar formation around the drainage site. The aqueous fluid then passes through the surgically created pathway into a subconjunctival filtration area, helping reduce intraocular pressure.
