Amniotic Membrane Transplantation Introduction

Amniotic Membrane Transplantation is an ophthalmic procedure in which donated amniotic membrane tissue is placed on the surface of the eye to support healing and tissue regeneration. It is used to treat certain corneal, conjunctival, and ocular surface disorders that cause damage or persistent inflammation. The membrane acts as a protective biological covering while the affected eye surface heals.

Biological Surface Restoration for Ocular Healing and Protection

This procedure is performed under topical or local anesthesia depending on the location and extent of the ocular surface damage. The eye and surrounding area are prepared with antiseptic solutions and covered using sterile Nivda Ophthalmic Drapes to maintain a controlled surgical field. Damaged or unhealthy tissue is carefully removed using fine ophthalmic instruments before the prepared amniotic membrane is positioned over the affected area. The membrane is secured using fine sutures, tissue adhesive, or an appropriate fixation technique according to the surgical requirement. Microsurgical instruments and magnification systems allow accurate placement while protecting the cornea, conjunctiva, and surrounding ocular structures. After confirming stable membrane placement, sterile ophthalmic disposables are used to protect the eye and support postoperative healing.

Medical Indications for Amniotic Membrane Transplantation

  • Severe dry-eye-related surface disease in selected cases
  • Chemical or thermal injuries affecting the ocular surface
  • Conjunctival defects following surgery or tissue removal
  • Certain inflammatory or degenerative ocular surface conditions
