Pediatric Cataract Surgery Introduction

Pediatric Cataract Surgery is an ophthalmic procedure performed to remove a cloudy natural lens from a child’s eye. The surgery helps restore a clear visual pathway and supports normal development of vision. Depending on the child’s age and eye condition, an intraocular lens may be implanted during or after the procedure.

Precision Lens Removal for Early Visual Development

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia in most children to provide comfort and allow precise surgical control. The eye and surrounding area are prepared with antiseptic solutions and covered using sterile Nivda Ophthalmic Drapes to maintain a clean and controlled surgical field. A small corneal or limbal incision is created, and specialized pediatric ophthalmic instruments are used to access and remove the cloudy lens material. Depending on the child’s age and clinical condition, the surgeon may perform anterior or posterior capsulotomy and limited anterior vitrectomy to maintain a clear visual pathway. An appropriately selected intraocular lens may be implanted when suitable, while some younger children may receive temporary optical correction instead. After confirming the surgical result, the incision is secured when required and sterile ophthalmic disposables are used to protect the eye during early recovery.
